i am thankful i am normal
after preparing for today's genetics test regarding mendel genetics.... i realised how lucky i am, to have no birth defects or genetic diseases.

there are so many diseases..... it seems that at some point of time in my life, there is a high chance that i will be struck by some diseases...because one day.. all the good luck will just run out.

my notes say that
chances of having a down syndrome kid is 1/1400 if the mother is <30yrs>
1/100 if the mother is 40 yrs old
1/16 if the mother is 45 yrs old

although my mum falls in the first category, but isnt 1/1400 a bit too high? thank goodness i am in the 1399/1400. then there are diseases such as cystic fibrosis, haemophilia, thalassaemia, duchene muscular distrophy, sickle cell anemia... and many more... all these diseases are rare.. but what if u r the super unlucky one that happens to be the 0.000001% ?

oh and then there is polydactyly (having extra fingers or toes) which is also due to genetics.. and then there is brachyphalangic (fingers with only 2 joints).. and Klinefelter / turner syndrome... prader willi syndrome... angelman syndrome.... and the list justs goes on and on...

even if i am normal at birth... that doesnt mean i will continue to be in perfect health always.. because the chances of getting cancer, heart disease, diabetes, kidney failure is quite high too, isnt it? with cancer being the top killer in singapore. did u know 20% of the deaths in singapore is due to coronary heart disease? ooh.. and when u start becoming an old folk, there's alzheimer's disease too..... :(

Therefore, i conclude that if one is able to die of old age, with no diseases, he or she is really really x7605237486507346 lucky. :) i wanna be that lucky person too. lol :D

enough of genetics. i need a break :)

p.s.: arent u glad u r normal too?
